Brush Lettering Workshop

I only just rediscovered these photos on my camera, and couldn't believe I'd forgotten to blog about the awesome brush lettering workshop I attended a few months back. Organised by Quill London (who also organised the calligraphy workshop I went to earlier on in the year) and taught by the lovely Emma Block and Terri Muncey (from The Lovely Drawer) both of whom I'm lucky to know in real life too, and both of whom are hugely talented.

The workshop started with an introduction to brush lettering, the tools of the trade, with Emma and Teri showing some examples of work they've created using brush lettering. I love how although they use the same tools and materials, their styles are still very different. Oh and of course there was cake. Everything is more fun with cake, right?

Our first task was to practice making basic shapes using the brushes and ink supplied, getting used to applying varying pressure, and controlling the brush to get the shape we wanted. Like most things, it looks so much easier than it actually is, as you can see from my attempts above! Curved shapes in particular are very tricky, and I'm pretty sure I was muttering under my breath while I worked.

After we had mastered the basic shapes, it was time to try writing some actual letters. We practiced writing out an uppercase and lowercase alphabet, joining up the lowercase letters where possible. Emma also showed us how she creates words using brush lettering, which was so interesting to watch!

Sadly my attempt at writing out the alphabets doesn't look quite as good as Emma and Teri's! But I think it's safe to say I am a bit hooked on brush lettering. I'm hoping if I keep practicing I will see some improvement - I'd love to be able to use some brush lettering elements in my own work, but I think I'm a long way from reaching that stage right now!

If you'd like to have a go at brush lettering you can see details of Quill's workshops right here.
