photoshoot planning

I am shooting the first ever lookbook for Ladybird Likes in a couple of weeks time. I'm SO excited about it, as I will finally have shots of the products being worn! Plus I have enlisted a couple of gorgeous bloggers to model for me, and I'm pretty sure we are going to have an awesome couple of days! So the last week or so has been pretty busy - I've been planning the different looks I want to use (there will be a different look for each product range, although I'm not going to be shooting all of the ranges), as well as organising props, backdrops, and finding locations. BUSY. but this is my favourite thing to do, so I'm loving every minute of it! and I thought I'd share a bit about how I plan, and what is inspiring me....

my first step whenever I'm preparing for any photoshoot is to brainstorm ideas for each look - whether that be backdrops, props, poses, outfits, make up, hairstyles, or locations. I try to write down key words to describe the style to help when I move on to the next stage....

the next stage is finding images that fit the different looks or styles I have in my head - I mainly use flickr and pinterest for this, as they have such a wealth of inspiration! then I print out my favourite images and stick them up on my wall so I can look at them grouped together.

the first look is a Meadham Kirchoff inspired 90s cotton candy look - lots of pink, sparkles, pastel colours, but with a bit of a 90s twist to it.

the second look is, to use a cliche, geek chic. nerd glasses, knee length skirts, cute blouses with dainty collars, cardigans and blazers, knee high socks, and brogues.

the third look is inspired by one of my favourite movies (and books) The Virgin Suicides. flower crowns, floaty dresses, braided hair, long skirts, neutral tones, and sheer fabrics.

the fourth and final look is a rockabilly meets 90s grunge look. quiffed hair, headscarves, red lips, and cats eye sunglasses, teamed with DMs, tartan, studded jackets, dungarees, and band t shirts.

I will be using the photos from this shoot to create a mini zine style lookbook, which will also include interviews with creative people, behind the scenes pics, and more, to create a low budget magazine! these will be sent to people who have supported Ladybird Likes from the start, my favourite bloggers, as well as to wholesale customers and to press. I can't wait to do this now and share the pics with you all! and from now on each new collection I launch will also have a photoshoot to go with it, and every so often I will release a new lookbook with the images from several collections in, plus lots of other content. EXCITING!

  4. This looks like such a great shoot! I am a makeup artist so rarely the one to create mood boards but I have a couple shoots coming up that I've organised myself and had so much fun finding inspiration pics.

It was really great to see your creative process for this - thank you for sharing.
Will you use some of the photos in your etsy shop listings too?
I can't wait to see them! The little zine sounds like such a cool end product.
I do have one question though - where/how will you source the clothes/accessories for the shoot? Will you go out and buy them?
Good luck with the shoot - hope you have a ball! xo

  12. I love your inspiration wall, especially the floral crowns, balloons and butterflies. You seem to have a pretty similar taste when it comes to inspirations. I've always wanted to create my own magazine, I would love a copy!
